For a while my whole business was the $5 treadmill. Canva planners, templates, the occasional client who needed "one tiny tweak" at 11pm on a Sunday.
It looked like freedom from the outside. It was not freedom.
The math never worked
A template sells once. The buyer downloads it, vanishes, and next month you need a new template to make the same money again. You're not building anything. You're refilling a bucket with a hole in it.
Client work is worse in a different way. The money is better, but your calendar is the ceiling. The second it's full, so is your income. And your phone is always, always buzzing.
Romance readers don't buy once
Here's the part that changed everything for me. Romance readers are the most loyal buyers on the internet. A lot of them read a dozen or more books a month. When they find an author they like, they don't buy one book. They buy the whole backlist.
So every book you publish isn't just a product. It's a doorway into every other book you've written. That's the compounding bit. Book one makes book two worth more. Book ten makes all nine before it worth more.
Amazon does the boring part
I don't ship anything. I don't answer support emails. Amazon hosts the files, takes the payments, prints the paperbacks on demand and deposits the royalties. My job is the books.
And yes, I use AI
Openly. As a business partner, not a ghostwriter. It helps me plot faster, draft faster and catch the saggy middles before a reader does. I still make every creative call. Lazy "write me a book" prompts give you slop. Directed, structured prompts give you a first draft you can actually work with.
Where to start
If you're stuck on the template treadmill or drowning in client DMs, the move isn't to work harder. It's to build something that keeps paying you after the work is done.
