Here's the good news first: uploading a book to Amazon KDP costs exactly $0. No setup fee, no monthly fee, no inventory. Amazon only makes money when you do.
The real question is what you spend around the upload: the cover, the editing, the tools. And the honest answer is anywhere from nothing to way too much.
Every business runs on two currencies, cash and time. If you're short on one, you spend more of the other. Here's what that looks like.
The $0 track: all sweat equity
You can absolutely publish a professional book without spending a dollar. It just costs you hours.
- Cover: DIY in Canva's free plan or Photopea, built from research on what's selling in your category.
- Editing: self-edit in layers, plus free AI grammar passes and a few beta readers from reader communities.
- Formatting: free tools like Draft2Digital's formatter or Kindle Create.
- AI: a free tier of your favorite model, or pay-per-use through an API for pennies.
This is how I'd start if money is tight. Your first book is your sandbox anyway. It's where you learn the mechanics.
The $100โ$300 track: lean and optimized
This is where most indie authors land once they've published a book or two:
- Cover: $50โ$150 for a genre-accurate premade, or a Canva Pro subscription (~$15/month) if you design your own.
- AI subscription: ~$20/month for one tool you actually use daily.
- Editing: a proofreader for the final pass, if the budget allows.
- Ads: a small test budget. Even ~$50 on Meta ads can tell you a lot about your cover and blurb.
Where people waste money
- A $500 "artistic" cover that ignores what readers in your genre expect. A researched $80 cover will outsell it every time.
- A $300/month tool stack before you've made a single sale.
- A full developmental edit on book one, before you know whether the market even wants the concept.
The cost nobody talks about: time
Your first book will probably take months. Mine did, and I already knew the industry. That's normal. What you're really building with book one is the system that makes books two through ten faster and cheaper.
Plan your budget in 10 minutes
Chapter 3 of Plot. Publish. Profit. walks through both tracks in detail and ends with a fill-in-the-blanks launch plan: budget, cover route, editing pipeline and target dates, all saved to your account. And if you'd rather skip the DIY cover entirely, I design covers too.
